Two Cuban ball players "missing" in Canada

July 30 - The Cuban regime's extra efforts to try and stop some of Cuba's best players from defecting at international tournaments has once again hit a snag. Two prominent players from their 2008 IBAF World Junior AAA roster were missing Tuesday.

Starting pitcher Noel Arguelles and infielder Jose Iglesias were last seen Sunday night at their team meal at the University of Alberta's Lister Hall.

"Rumors were swirling around a couple of days ago," said tournament chairman Ron Hayter.

"There were denials everywhere and when everything settled down nobody thought anything about it. Both players ate the pre-game meal, then went back to their rooms at the university and got dressed to go on the bus, and they didn't get on the bus."

The players keep defecting even though the Cuban teams have as many players as they have security agents accompanying the team to try to prevent defections.

"In tournaments like this, Cuba's always had trouble with defections," said Hayter. "When we first hosted a tournament like this in 1981, they were to bring 20 players. They ended up bringing 12 other people, who were all called trainers. That's a lot of trainers for 20 players, eh?"

Cuba got off to a great start in the tournament. They are 3-1 and have positioned themselves into medal contention. But Arguelles and Iglesias will leave a big hole in the Cuban lineup. Arguelles was the ace of their pitching staff, while Iglesias was one of their hottest hitters.

A third baseball player defects in Canada, and there are rumors about another 2 "missing"

August 3 - Another Cuban baseball player has gone missing in Edmonton, tournament officials said Saturday.

The Cuban coach and team confirmed through team liaison Phyllis Pannebaker that the total number of missing players is three. "The two (Noel Arguelles and Jose Iglesias) left, and the one left the next day," said Pannebaker on Saturday.

A man wearing a Team Cuba uniform said through a translator Saturday that pitcher Raydel Sanchez was missing, and a scout at Saturday's game between South Korea and Cuba said he didn't see Sanchez on the field.

Whispers have been circulating at Telus Fiend that a total of five players are missing.

Managers for both Team Canada and Team Chinese Taipei said they'd heard three players had defected in addition to Arguelles and Iglesias, who were reported missing on Tuesday.

At this rate, the next Team Cuba will have Fidel Castro pitching from a wheelchair wearing his Adidas jump suit, Raul catching, Lage playing all infield positions, Alarcón covering the outfield (if they can find a baseball cap that will fit him) and Perez Roque as bat boy
